pet birds guide
When looking for a new pet for your home, you should definitely consider getting a pet bird: they're beautiful to look at, easy to train, intelligent and usually very sociable creatures. Plus, with the huge variety of breeds and species to choose from, you're bound to find the perfect pet bird for your home and lifestyle, especially when you browse through our detailed
bird information
pages, and make use of our filters to narrow down your ideal bird's breed, species, type, gender and size.
Although birds do make fun, interesting and loyal pets, this isn't to say that just buying the first pretty bird that catches your eye and popping it in a cage with a few seeds will go without any glitches. If you're someone who gets easily bored, a pet bird may not be the best choice of pet for you, as some pet birds can outlive their owners! The life expectancy of birds varies hugely, from twelve years for
doves and pigeons
, to anything between fifteen to a staggering eighty years for
pet parrots
. You'll also need to dedicate a fair bit of time to your new bird when you first get it, as each bird needs taming on an individual basis, while breeds such as
macaws
and
cockatiels
can get pretty grumpy when left alone for long periods of time.
If the slightest bit of dust sends you into a frenzied fit of sneezes and wheezes, it's probably best to steer clear of breeds such as doves and pigeons, as the dust produced when these feathered friends preen can cause problems for allergy and asthma sufferers. Also, if you're new to owning birds, it might be best to start with a
parakeet
or a macaw, as these are usually easier to care for than breeds such as
conures
, which do have a tendency to be moody and reserved with strangers, and are also notoriously noisy. So, whichever bird you decide is best for you, our easy-to-use filters, detailed listings and a phone number for you to contact the seller directly will ensure that you get a great deal.
