Canaries differ slightly in appearance. They are generally proud birds and often stand tall. Some canary types are bred for their song, whilst others for their beautiful colourings. The main wild colours of the common canary are yellow and green. Canaries are named after the Spanish Canary Islands, where they have flourished since the 1400’s. The canary was brought over to Europe by the Spanish in the 1600's and new breeding programmes were set up. The canary was once used by British miners to test the mines for toxic gases such as Methane and Carbon Monoxide. This method proved extremely effective. In fact, many lives were saved.
