The Cockatiel originates from Australia and is a small parrot of the Cacatuidae family. They are colourful, active and intelligent birds. On average Cockatiels are 32 cm in length and weigh between 80 and 122 grams. They are generally a mid-grey colour with an orange cheek patch and a white blaze on the wings. Female Cockatiels often show a row of yellow specks underneath the wings.

Cockatiels have a long lifespan. In fact, they can live up to 20 years, so deciding to welcome this bird into your home requires lots of thought. Cockatiels are very sociable birds and they need to interact with their owners and other birds to enable them to thrive. They prefer living with their own species in pairs or groups. If left alone for long periods, Cockatiels will get lonely and may become depressed and some may stop eating.

A cockatiel’s diet should consist of seeds, berries, fresh fruit and vegetables. An all seed diet can often result in an unhealthy or overweight bird.

Cockatiels tend to be quite messy birds. Like the cockatoo, they produce more dust than other species of parrot. Owners with allergies or asthma may be affected by the feather dust particles released during preening and should think carefully before getting a pet Cockatiel. Overall the Cockatiel makes a wonderful companion for both new and experienced bird owners.
