Dove / Pigeon
Bird information homepage
Doves and Pigeons are quiet and peaceful birds that make wonderful pets. Although this type of bird is not the most brightly coloured, Doves and Pigeons are still very attractive. They are stout-bodied birds with short necks and short slender bills. They are available in a variety of feathered types and colours, ranging from whites to greys and most shades in between. Doves and Pigeons are found in many sizes. Some are about the size of a sparrow while some can be the size of a large chicken.
Doves are often also a symbol of chastity and eternal love. Once they find a mate, they spend their days preening and looking after each other. Doves are always loyal to their mates until death. Both male and female Doves will sit on the nest and once the chicks hatch, both the male and female Dove will produce milk and take turns feeding their young.
Doves and Pigeons have a relatively long lifespan. In fact, they can live up to 12 years. Most Doves and Pigeons are ground dwellers and seed eaters. They like to walk around but will roost high up. Owners with allergies or asthma may be affected by the feather dust particles released during preening and should think carefully before getting a pet Dove or Pigeon.
