History
The Burmese cat is named after it's country of origin; Burma (now known as Myanmar). In 1930 Dr J.C Thompson imported a small brown female cat to San Francisco. This cat went on to be the founding cat for the Burmese breed as we now know it. Breeding programmes were established in an attempt to produce offspring which bred true and in 1955 the blue was introduced. Chocolate and lilac followed in 1959 and the common tortoiseshell varieties in the 1970’s. The Burmese contributed to the development of the Bombay, the Burmilla and the Tonkinese. Though uncommon in parts of Europe, the Burmese is popular throughout the world.
