In Japan the cat is known as the “Mi-Ke” and is thought to be a symbol of hospitality and friendship. The breed’s bobbed tail is caused by a recessive gene. Japanese Bobtails were recognised by the CFA in the early 1970’s and then by the FIFe in 1990. The Japanese will often furnish their homes with a ceramic “Mi – Ke” with one paw in the air. This is said to display a welcoming symbol.
