History
The Maine Coon is one of the oldest natural breeds in North America. A number of legends surround its origin. A common theory is that it originated from mating a domestic cat with a racoon (although this is biologically impossible). The Maine Coon’s bushy tail and the racoon-like colouring is thought to have led to the adoption of its name. The Maine coon was recognised in America as early as 1967 and didn’t become accepted in the UK until the mid 1980’s, where this breed is now extremely popular.
