The Manx is thought to be tail-less due to a genetic mutation that became common on the island. The Manx tail-less gene is dominant; kittens from Manx parents are generally born without any tail. However, having two copies of the gene is lethal and kittens are usually terminated before birth. It is advised to breed Manx’s with American Shorthairs or British Shorthairs, not all kittens in the litter will be Manx’s, but the deadly gene combination is avoided. Breeding two tail-less Manx’s together must be avoided.
