Cat information homepage

General
Description: Long muscular body with a short coat
Size: The Tonkinese is medium sized
Weight: 2.5 – 6 kg

Characteristics
The Tonkinese is very similar to that of its cousins; the Burmese and Siamese. They are friendly, affectionate and alert. The Tonkinese is a playful and athletic breed. They get along well with other cats, but struggle to make canine friends. This breed tends to be an escape artist and will run away if not watched. Although not as vocal as its Siamese and Burmese cousins, the Tonkinese is quite a loud cat.

Grooming
The Tonkinese does not require a great deal of maintenance and a weekly groom with a soft brush is sufficient. During shedding months grooming should take place daily.

History
The Tonkinese is basically a cross between the Siamese and Burmese and originated in Canada in the early 1930’s. This breed was recognised by the CFA in the late 1970’s. Although approved in America, the breed is still only granted provisional status in the UK.
