General Description: Solid structure, semi-long coat Size: The Turkish Van is a medium to large sized breed Weight: 3.5 – 9 kg Characteristics The Turkish Van is an extremely intelligent and sociable cat. This breed was once quite aggressive, but selective breeding has made the Turkish Van friendly and not aggressive towards other cats. The Turkish Van has relatively loud voice and although very affectionate, they can become quite possessive towards their favourite owner. This breed just loves water and outside access is preferred to fulfil their natural hunting instinct. Grooming The Turkish Van does not require a great deal of maintenance and a weekly groom with a soft brush is sufficient. During shedding months grooming should take place daily. History The Turkish Van was first discovered around Lake Van (Turkey). This breed just loves to swim, which is very rare with domesticated cats. The Turkish Van is a very old breed and was first recorded in the 18th century. The breed was recognised in the late 1960’s by both the GCCF and the FIFe. The Turkish Van now regularly appears on show benches worldwide.
