The breed can be distrusting of strangers and should not be left alone with unfamiliar children. The Australian Cattle Dog is one of the most intelligent breeds of dog and can become bored easily. It is not advised to leave them alone for long periods of time. They can pick up serious behavioural problems if not stimulated both mentally and physically. These dogs need to be a part of the family. The Australian Cattle Dog is an excellent watch dog and will alert their owner of any intruders immediately. This breed is naturally a working dog and is capable of commanding sheep and large animals on farms. Unfortunately, because their way of getting sheep to move is nipping at their heels, they tend to also nip at people. The breed loves to chase and should not be left alone with small fleeing animals. Exercise The Australian Cattle Dog requires vigorous exercise. A twice daily walk for around 40 - 60 minutes is sufficient. This breed also loves to run free off the lead but should only be allowed to do so in a secure location. Lack of exercise will lead the Australian Cattle Dog to destructive behaviour. Grooming A weekly groom of the Australian Cattle Dog with a firm bristle brush is recommended. Only bathe this breed when necessary as they are naturally very clean dogs. Health The Australian Cattle Dog is a very hardy breed and generally of good health but can be prone to deafness and eye problems. Life Expectancy 12 – 15 years History The Australian Cattle Dog has genetic links with many different dog breeds including; the Dalmatian, the Old English Sheepdog, Blue erle Collie and the native Australian Dingo. Combining the characteristics from each of these dogs resulted in an extremely hardy breed with incredible stamina and excellent herding tendencies. The Australian Cattle Dog has been used for guarding, herding, hunting and as a companion and pet. The breed is recognised by all major dog groups worldwide.
