Temperament
The Bolognese is a very serious, alert and charming breed. This even tempered little dog is highly intelligent and can learn tricks quickly. This breed is slightly more reserved than its cousin, the Bichon Frise. They are sweet natured, loyal and they simply love human company. They are good watchdogs and will warn their owner to any unusual noises or the arrival of strangers. The Bolognese gets along well with other dogs and household animals if well socialised as a puppy. The Bolognese adapts well to any situation and apartment style life is ideal. However, they love to explore the outdoors so a garden is preferred.

Exercise
The Bolognese is a playful little dog and although they do not require a lot of exercise they will benefit from a daily walk and play sessions. Only let the Bolognese run off the lead in a safe and secure location.

Grooming
The Bolognese will require daily brushing with a firm bristle brush. Bathe or dry shampoo monthly, making sure that the animal is dry and warm afterwards. The eyes need cleaning on a daily basis as they are inclined to weep which stains the face.

Health
The Bolognese is generally a healthy breed. However, some can be prone to eye problems, including cataracts and retinal atrophy. The breed can also suffer from epilepsy.

Life Expectancy
12 – 15 years

History
The Bolognese originated in Bologna, Italy as early as the twelfth century. The Bolognese was often given as a gift to Belgium royalty in the 16th century. They share genetic links with the Bichon Frise and the Maltese. Today, the Bolognese is used as companion and show dog. The are recognised throughout the world by most major dog clubs.
