General Description: Lean and muscular breed with a short dense coat Height: 53 - 63 cm Weight: 20 - 29 kg Colour: White with black or liver spots randomly dotted over coat Utility group Temperament The Dalmatian is a loyal, affectionate and gentle companion. This handsome, well balanced breed has unlimited endurance and agility. They tend to be very well behaved when indoors, but are far happier when they have plenty of work to do outside. The Dalmatian is relatively easy to train but will require a consistent and gentle owner. This breed loves human company and needs to be a part of the family’s day to day activities. They adore children and will get along with other dogs and animals if socialised as a pup. It is not advised to leave the Dalmatian alone for long periods of time as Isolation will lead to destructive behaviour. Exercise Dalmatians require regular vigorous exercise. A twice daily walk/run/swim for around 40 – 50 minutes is sufficient. Grooming A weekly groom of the Dalmatian’s coat with a firm bristle brush is recommended. Health The Dalmatian is generally of good health but can be prone to deafness. Also bladder stones and skin allergies can be a problem with this breed. Life Expectancy 10 - 12 years History The exact origin of the Dalmatian is unknown. However, various countries claim creation of the breed including: Yugoslavia, Croatia and England. Dalmatians were once used in the middle ages as hounds, but have since been classed as a non working/ utility breed. The breed became popular as a carriage dog in the 1800's. They would run beside the horse drawn carriages and guard the travellers on board. The adaptable Dalmatian has also been used as a circus entertainer, ratter and guard dog. Today, the handsome Dalmatian is mainly used as a companion dog and is recognised by all major worldwide dog clubs.
