General Description: Massive muscular dog with a wiry coat Height: 70 - 85cm Weight: 35 - 51kg Colour: Grey, fawn, or brindle Hound group Temperament The Deerhound is a true gentle giant, they are very calm and affectionate. This trustworthy breed is very reliable around children and also gets on very well with other dogs. They are not natual guard dogs, but they will often deter unwanted guests with their size alone. They tend to greet everyone as a friend and can be clumsy. They are slow to mature and sometimes take two years before they are fully grown. It is advised to train the dog not to pull on the lead when they are young and before they are too strong. The Deerhound is a quiet breed that needs plenty of space and apartment life is not recommended. Do not leave the Deerhound alone with small fleeing animals. Exercise The Deerhound has plenty of energy and needs a lot of exercise. A twice daily walk for around 40 – 50 minutes is sufficient. Grooming A weekly groom with a firm bristle brush is recommended for the Deerhound as the coat can become matted. Trim around the eyes and ears with blunt nosed scissors. Health The Deerhound is generally of very good health but like most giant dogs can be prone to heart disease and can also suffer from bloat and hip dysplasia. Life Expectancy 6 - 9 years History The Deerhound originated in Scotland many years ago. It is thought that the breed is a close relative of the Greyhound and although they are classified as sight hounds, the Deerhound has an excellent sense of smell. They were popular with the highest Scottish nobility. In fact, the breed was once known as the royal dog of Scotland. Today, this agile hound is used as a family pet and show dog. Deerhounds are recognised throughout the world by all major dog clubs.
