This charming breed is easily trained and is very patient and gentle. Flat coated Retrievers enjoy pleasing their owners and seems to shine in obedience competitions, so training can be interesting and fun for both owner and dog. These dogs are gifted with both a fine intuition and an excellent sense of smell. Although Flat Coated Retrievers are unlikely to attack, they do make excellent watchdogs and will signal owners loudly if a strangers was to approach. Flat Coated Retrievers are friendly towards other dogs and family pets, they love to be around people and if isolated, or left alone for long periods of time, the Flat Coated Retriever can become destructive. The breed is not only an excellent retriever and swimmer but also an outstanding family companion. Exercise Flat Coated Retrievers require regular physical exercise. A daily walk/run/swim for around 40 – 50 minutes is sufficient. Flat Coated Retriever love to swim and should be allowed to do so whenever possible. Grooming Medium maintenance is required. A weekly groom with a soft brush is sufficient. Health Flat Coated Retrievers are generally of good health but can be prone to skin allergies, diabetes and some eye problems. Also hip dysplasia and epilepsy can be a problem with this breed. Life Expectancy 8 –10years History The Flat Coated Retriever originated in the mid 1800's. It is thought the breed was developed by crossing several breeds, including the Labrador,Irish Setter, Golden Retriever,Irish Water Dog, and the Newfoundland. The Flat Coated Retriever was used for many purposes, but mainly retrieving. They can retrieve from land, water and marshy terrain. This wonderful dog is still used today as a retriever and a show dog, but above all, as a family companion. They are recognised throughout the world by most major dog clubs.
