German hunters required a dog with a great nose that would be able to point and retrieve from land or water within good distance for a man hunting on foot. The German Shorthaired Pointer probably has genetic links to the Old Spanish Pointer, Foxhound and English Pointer. Nowadays the German Shorthaired Pointer has a high reputation; this is down to the German hunters breeding efforts during the mid 1900’s.
