History
The Giant Schnauzer originated in Germany and is one of three Schnauzer breeds (Miniature Schnauzer and Standard Schnauzer). It is thought that the Giant Schnauzer was developed using breeds like the Great Dane. Many years ago dogs very like today’s Schnauzer was expected to perform household and farm duties in native Germany. These would include: guarding livestock, protecting their owners and ridding the farmyard of rats and mice. This wiry-haired, medium-sized dog descended from early European herding and guardian breeds. Named after the German word for muzzle, "Schnauze", the Schnauzer was used to accompany coaches, as messengers in World War One and to watch and protect children. The breed has been portrayed in paintings by several European artists, including Durer (who owned a Schnauzer) and Rembrandt.
