This engaging little dog is very sweet natured and loyal and simply loves human company. They are a poor watchdog but will warn their owner to any unusual noises or the arrival of strangers. The Japanese Chin gets along well with other dogs and household animals if well socialised as a puppy. They are not suited to homes with small children as they do not enjoy rough play. They are more suited to quiet homes where they can go about their business peacefully. The Japanese Chin adapts well to any situation and apartment style life is ideal. However, they love to explore the outdoors, so a garden is preferred. Exercise The Japanese Chin is a playful little dog and although they do not require a lot of exercise they will benefit from a daily walk and play sessions. Only let the Japanese Chin run off the lead in a safe and secure location. Grooming The Japanese Chin will require daily brushing with a firm bristle brush. Dry shampoo occasionally and bathe only when necessary. The eyes need cleaning on a daily basis and the ears should be checked regularly for signs of infection. Health The Japanese Chin is generally a healthy breed. However, some can be prone to eye problems, including cataracts and retinal atrophy. Life Expectancy 12 – 15 years History The Japanese Chin was developed in Japan around 150 years ago. This breed (also known as the Japanese Spaniel) was the preferred pet amongst Japanese royalty and wealthy citizens. It is thought that the breed has genetic links with the Pekinese. They have only ever been used as a loving companion and are recognised by all major dog clubs throughout the world.
