This breed is very loyal to its family. However, some may be reserved with strangers. The Norwegian Elkhound is alert and lively. They make great companions for children and make reliable guard dogs. It is important to be firm (but never harsh) with this dog. Puppies need firm but gentle discipline from an early age. The Norwegian Elkhound can be aggressive with same sex dogs in the household. Elkhounds are usually good with non-canine pets, but always use caution. The Norwegian Elkhound prefers to live by a set routine and can adapt well to urban living. Exercise The Norwegian Elkhound requires regular exercise, a twice daily walk for around 40 – 60 minutes is sufficient.
Grooming A daily groom with a bristle brush is recommended. Bathing is unnecessary unless required by owner. Health The Norwegian Elkhound is generally of good health but can be prone to eye trouble. This breed can also suffer from hip dysplasia. Life Expectancy 12 – 15 years History The Norwegian Elkhound is an ancient breed. A skeleton similar to today's Norwegian Elkhound has been found dating from 4000 to 5000 BC. Dogs of this breed type have been used to hunt elk, bears and moose since Viking times. The dog can scent game from a distance of several kilometres. They track the quarry and attract its attention by barking. Then they hold the animal at bay until the hunter arrives to make the kill. The breed was first used in dog shows in the late 1870’s when the Norwegian Hunters Association developed breed shows. In the early 1920’s, the Norwegian Elkhound Club was formed and the breed was officially recognised by the UK Kennel Club.
