Temperament
The Old English Sheepdog is playful, loyal and intelligent. This glamorous breed has great stamina and endurance. They learn quickly but require a patient owner to train them while they are still a manageable size. The Old English Sheepdog is an intelligent breed and can become bored easily which can unfortunately lead to bad habits. The Old English Sheepdog is a natural herder and may try to herd small children by bumping them. However, they are good watch dogs and will alert their owner with low pitched and very loud barking. They should not be left alone with small fleeing animals but can be trusted with children of any age. They will get along with other dogs and animals well if socialised when puppies.

Exercise
The Old English Sheepdog requires vigorous exercise. A twice daily walk/run/swim for around 40 - 60 minutes is sufficient. This breed also loves to run free off the lead but should only be allowed to do so in a secure location. Lack of exercise will lead the Old English Sheepdog to destructive behaviour.

Grooming
A daily groom with a firm bristle brush is recommended. Only bathe this breed when necessary. It does not take long for the Old English Sheepdogs coat to become out of control.

Health
The Old English Sheepdog is generally a healthy breed. However, some can be prone to hip dysplasia and eye problems.  The Old English Sheepdog is not suited to hot climates due to their thick double coat.

Life Expectancy
10 – 12 years

History
The Old English Sheepdog originated in England’s West Country and was used for herding live stock on local farms. They are thought to have genetic links with the Deerhound. The breed was once known as the Bobtail because of their very short tails. The tail was often docked as a way to identify tax exempt herding dogs. Each spring owners would sheer their dogs and use their fur to make clothing and blankets. Today, the breed is mainly used as a companion and show dog. The Old English Sheep Dog is recognised by all major dog clubs throughout the world.
