Temperament
The Pyrenean Mountain Dog is a very loyal, obedient and gentle dog. This breed is very intelligent and extremely eager to please their master. They are outstanding guard/watchdogs and are often used to guard livestock. The Pyrenean Mountain Dog must be trained from an early age with a firm hand as they grow to be very strong adult dogs and can be too independent. They can be aggressive towards other dogs of a similar size, so early socialisation is recommended. Strangers will be mistrusted by this breed and the family will be fearlessly protected. They tend to bark a lot and some tend to drool and slobber. This large, brave dog is not suitable for built up areas or apartment life.

Exercise
The Pyrenean Mountain Dog will require regular exercise. A daily walk or run for around 40 – 50 minutes is sufficient. To be allowed to run off the lead in a safe area is preferred to keep this breed in top shape.

Grooming
A regular groom with a firm brush is recommended. The Pyrenean Mountain Dog is a relatively high maintenance breed.

Health
The Pyrenean Mountain Dog can be prone to eye problems and hip dysplasia. This breed can also be prone to deafness.

Life Expectancy
8 – 10 years

History
The Pyrenean Mountain Dog originated in France. They take their name from the mountain ranges of south west Europe where they have been used as guardians of the flocks. The Pyrenean Mountain Dog is a genetic relative of the St Bernard and the Newfoundland. This breed was born to live in the mountains, and is a hardy breed. It is thought the Pyrenean Mountain Dog may have been used as a dog of war in ancient battles. The breed has also been used as an avalanche rescue dog, as a sled dog, as a pack dog on ski trips, and as a protector of property and people.  In the United States they are known as ‘Great Pyrenees’. In the United Kingdom, they are known as the Pyrenean Mountain Dog.
