Temperament
The Saint Bernard is a very loyal, affectionate and reliable dog. This placid breed can be overwhelmingly affectionate and just loves to please their owner.  Saint Bernards are extremely friendly, gentle and very good with children. This is a slow moving breed that is both patient and obedient. The Saint Bernard is highly intelligent and very easy to train. Young dogs must be taught not to pull on the lead as soon as possible, as this habit will be difficult to break when they are adults. Due to this dogs massive size, make sure you socialise it well as a puppy, both with other people and strange dogs. The Saint Bernard is a great watchdog. Its size is a good enough deterrent for most unwanted guests. They tend to drool after eating/drinking. Undoubtedly the Saint Bernard is an extremely pleasurable dog to have around if the conditions are correct, but not to be purchased on a whim.

Exercise
The Saint Bernard will require regular exercise. A daily walk or run for around 40 – 50 minutes is sufficient. To be allowed to explore off the lead in a safe area is preferred. Never exercise this breed directly after eating as they are prone to bloat.

Grooming
A regular groom with a firm brush is recommended. The Saint Bernard is a relatively low maintenance breed.

Health
The Saint Bernard is can be prone to epilepsy, bloat, eye problems and hip dysplasia. The breed is not suited to hot climates.

Life Expectancy
8 – 10 years

History
The Saint Bernard is named after ‘Bernard de Menthon’ who founded a famous hospice built in a remote alpine in Switzerland. It is thought that sometime during the 17th century the Saint Bernard started to be used as a mountain rescue dogs, helping mountain travellers back to the hospice for shelter and food. In fact more than 2,000 people have been saved by this amazing breed. The dogs search out and find the lost traveller; lay next to him and lick him to give him warmth, then one dog from the search party will head back to the hospice to alert a full rescue team. The Saint Bernard's has an outstanding sense of smell, they can find a lost or injured person even under many feet of snow.  The breed is descended from the Tibetan Mastiff and therefore must have been developed using dogs brought to the Alps around the year 1020 by the Romans. The breed is recognised by all major worldwide dog clubs.
