Temperament
The Shih Tzu is a very playful, well balanced and independent breed. This little dog is full of character and just loves human company. The Shih Tzu is a good watchdog and will warn their owner to any unusual noises or the arrival of strangers. The Shih Tzu responds well to training and can pick up new tricks quickly. This breed gets along well with other dogs and household animals if well socialised as a puppy. This breed may become reserved towards children and some adults and therefore is not suited to homes with small children. The Shih Tzu tends to bark obsessively and this should be discouraged from an early age. The Shih Tzu adapts well to any situation and apartment style life is ideal. However, they love to explore the outdoors so a garden is preferred.

Exercise
The Shih Tzu is a playful little dog and although they do not require a lot of exercise they will benefit from a daily walk and play sessions. Only let Shih Tzus run off the lead in a safe and secure location.

Grooming
The Shih Tzu will require daily brushing with a firm bristle brush. Bathe or dry shampoo as necessary, making sure that the animal is dry and warm afterwards. The ears need checking regularly for infection.

Health
The Shih Tzu is generally a healthy breed. However, some can be prone to eye, ear and inherited kidney problems. This breed may also suffer with breathing difficulties during hot weather.

Life Expectancy
12 – 15 years

History
The Shih Tzu (pronounced Shid-zoo) has genetic links with the Lhasa Apso and the Pekingese. This dog is also known as the Chinese Lion Dog and was popular within the Imperial Chinese court. In the early 1930’s the first pair of Shih Tzu puppies were brought to England. The breed was recognised by the UK kennel club by the mid 1940’s. Today the breed remains extremely popular among dog fanciers around the world and excels at dog shows.
