General Description: Strong dog with a compact body and a wiry hard coat Height: 43 - 51cm Weight: 23 - 29kg Colour: Usually black or pepper and salt in colour Working group Temperament The solidly built Schnauzer is an intelligent, lively and affectionate breed. They are naturally well-balanced and make an excellent watchdog. The Schnauzer is a fearless and protective dog. Clever, intelligent, and playful, the Standard Schnauzers need plenty of human affection. This breed can be head strong, so requires firm and consistent handling from an early age. The Schnauzer should be socialised well when puppies to prevent over-protectiveness in adult life. They are always friendly and never aggressive. Exercise Schnauzers need plenty of exercise to stimulate both body and mind. This breed will require a twice daily walk for around 20 – 30 minutes. Grooming Schnauzers will require a daily groom with a short firm brush. This will prevent the wiry coat from matting. It is also recommended to clean the whiskers after each meal. Health Schnauzers are generally healthy dogs and can live for a relatively long time. However, they can be prone to eye problems in later life. Life Expectancy 13 – 15 years History The Schnauzer originated in Germany and is the oldest of the three Schnauzer breeds (Miniature Schnauzer and Giant Schnauzer). Many years ago dogs very much like today’s Schnauzer were expected to perform household and farm duties in native Germany. These would include: guarding livestock, protecting their owners and ridding the farmyard of rats and mice. This wiry-haired, medium-sized dog descended from early European herding and guardian breeds. Named after the German word for muzzle, "Schnauze", the Schnauzer was used to accompany coaches, as messengers in World War One and to watch and protect children. The breed has been portrayed in paintings by several European artists, including Durer (who owned a Schnauzer) and Rembrandt.
