German breeders developed the Weimaraner to meet the requirements of German foresters in the 1900’s. The Weimaraner was created by crossing Bloodhounds with native German hunting breeds like the Red Schweisshund. The breed was originally used to track, hunt and bring down big game such as deer and wild boar but was later adapted to smaller game and upland birds. Weimaraners have been used as rescue dogs, guide/service dogs for the disabled, and as police dogs in both native Germany and the UK. This popular breed is recognised by all major worldwide dog clubs.
