Temperament
The Welsh Corgi is a loyal, affectionate and independent companion. This breed loves human company and needs to be a part of the family’s day to day activities. The Welsh Corgi adores children and will get along with other dogs and animals if socialised as a puppy. Unfortunately, because their way of getting sheep to move is by nipping at their heels, they tend to also nip at people. This trait should be discouraged in all Welsh Corgi puppies. It is not advised to leave the Welsh Corgi alone for long periods of time as they can suffer from separation anxiety. The Welsh Corgi is a very good watch dog and will alert their owner of any intruders immediately. This breed is naturally a working dog and is capable of commanding sheep and large animals on farms. The breed loves to chase and should not be left alone with small fleeing animals.

Exercise
The Welsh Corgi requires regular exercise. A daily walk for around 20 - 40 minutes is sufficient. This breed also loves to run free off the lead but should only be allowed to do so in a secure location.

Grooming
A weekly groom of the Welsh Corgi with a firm bristle brush is recommended. Only bathe the Corgi when necessary as they are naturally very clean dogs.

Health
The Welsh Corgi is generally of good health but can be prone to spinal problems, epilepsy and eye disease.

Life Expectancy
12 – 15 years

History
Both the Pembroke and Cardigan Welsh Corgi are separate breeds and have been so for around 80 years. It is thought that both types of Welsh Corgi were developed in Wales where they were used to herd small sheep and cattle in the extremely steep Welsh hills. Their low stature helped them to move out of the way when cows kicked and they would nip at their heels and bark to dictate the movements of the cattle. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is the favoured breed of Queen Elizabeth II. It is because of this royal association that the Pembroke has become more popular then the Cardigan Welsh Corgi.
