General Description: Compact, little dog with a hard weather resistant coat Height: 23 - 31cm Weight: 6 - 8kg Colour: All white coat with black nose and eyes Terrier group Temperament The West Highland Terrier is a very alert, friendly and fearless little breed. This playful dog is always ready to receive affection or fool around with their owners. This breed is very intelligent and can be trained easily. The West Highland Terrier is a great watchdog and will alert their master by growling and standing firmly towards any approaching stranger. The West Highland Terrier likes to dig and search for vermin, so it is not wise to leave them unsupervised in your beautifully landscaped garden. This breed can be a chaser and should not be left with small fleeing animals. Exercise The West Highland Terrier will get most of the exercise required by running around the garden. However a daily walk for around 20 – 40 minutes is recommended. Grooming A regular groom with a firm bristle brush is recommended. The West Highland Terrier‘s coat can become a bit of a matted mess if not groomed regularly enough. Bathe around once a month. Health The West Highland Terrier is generally of very good health but can be prone to skin allergy and can also suffer from jaw problems and deterioration of the hip joint. Life Expectancy 12 – 14 years History The West Highland Terrier is basically a white Cairn Terrier. This breed was formerly known as the Poltalloch Terrier. During the 1900’s a Scottish breeder of the Cairn Terrier had some white puppies in his litters. The breeder used the white offspring to develop the West Highland white Terrier, which is basically a white Cairn Terrier. White pups from other terriers like the Bedlington Terrier were occasionally introduced to the bloodline for its desired characteristics/temperament, but this stopped in the mid 1850s. The West Highland Terrier was bred to hunt and control the population of vermin on farms including: rabbits, squirrels and mice. Today this breed is used, not for their chaser/hunter instincts, but for their wonderful companionship.
