General

Weight: 3.5-4.86 kg
Description: Like the Blanc de Bouscat, this rabbit has Albino eyes that are pink with easily visible blood vessels. The body is white with black markings around the tail, feet, nose and ears. Large litters.

Characteristics

The Californian rabbit does not always make the best pet for children since they are very strong and sometimes difficult to handle. Consequently these rabbits are mostly bred for commercial and show purposes.

Grooming

When caring for your Californian rabbit it is important that they do not get too hot or too cold; temperature regulation is a crucial aspect of their upkeep. Use a slicker brush to remove excess hair when the rabbit is molting to avoid their coats becoming matted or any ingestion of hairballs.

History

The Californian rabbit was first bred in the 1920s in the United States by crossing New Zealand whites with the standard Chinchilla rabbit breed and Himalayan breeds. Whilst not initially that popular, this breed of rabbit is today the second most popular meat producing breed world-wide, famed for not only its meat but also its hair.
