Rat Breeds

Each variety of rat has its own unique characteristics so it is useful to thoroughly research whatever is appropriate to you before purchasing.
Rats require at least an hour of exercise outside of the cage each day as well as an appropriately sized cage to run around in. It is common to buy rats in pairs, or even threes, though often owners who have had rats for some time can have many more.
There is also a difference in temperament between male and female rats. Males will enjoy physical interaction with their owner more and female rats will enjoy exploration, but all varieties of rat are known to be very friendly, sociable animals if handled correctly and often and if from an experienced breeder.
A large cage with room for jumping and climbing is appropriate for all varieties of rats. Toys will help entertain your pet rat and an appropriate number of places to sleep and hide are needed to keep them happy and free from boredom.
