Oddeyed Rat
Odd-Eyed Rat (Double Odd-Eyed rat)
Back to
rat breeds homepage
Appearance
Any variety of rat can be an Odd-Eyed rat or a Double Odd-Eyed rat, but they are most likely to appear in rats with amber, champagne or fawn colouring. One eye will be pink and the other will be black due to a recessive gene in the Odd-Eye, or both eyes will be pink/red in a Double Odd-Eyed rat.
Colouring
Often have significant levels of white in the fur.
Health
The Odd-Eyed and Double-Eyed rats often come from what is known as ‘high-white’ in rats, meaning there is a far greater risk of megacolon, a condition where there are nerve endings missing from the intestinal tract, resulting in bloating and problems passing stool. All rats can suffer from a variety of diseases, most commonly involving the respiratory system. It is not uncommon for a rat to sneeze throughout the day as they have very sensitive noses, but if there is a build up of porphyrin (also known as ‘red tears’) around the eyes and the nose, this could be a sign of a serious underlying issue. Like all female rats, are also prone to growing tumours.
Life Expectancy
1 - 3 years
History
The Odd-eyed Rat became popular towards the latter end of the 19th century, though it has taken some time to breed an Odd-eyed Rat as healthy and as strong as other varieties of rat.
