Satin Rat

Back to rat breeds homepage

Appearance
The Satin rat is known for its very shiny, lustrous coat which appears longer than that of a Standard rat because of the hair lying flat against its body, though they can sometimes have a more ruffled appearance. The hair is also very fine and soft to touch with a transparent outer hair shell. Satin rats also have slightly more curved whiskers than Standard rats.

Colouring
Shown in any recognised colour.

Health
Satin Rats can suffer from the same diseases that affect all rat varieties such as respiratory diseases like pneumonia, tumours and problems with balance due to inner ear infections. Female rats can also suffer from uterine and urinary bleeding. Satin rats must also have their claws clipped when necessary to ensure no injury is caused to the rat or its companions.

Life Expectancy
1 - 3 years

History
Satin rats first appeared in a rattery in California. The intensity of the coat colour is due to a genetic mutation and the hairs ability to reflect light.
